Santa Catalina Omnium 2016

On the last January weekend 2016, ZiaVelo racers have traveled to Tucson to participate in the Santa Catalina Omnium. The 2nd edition of this event consisted of the BioPark Blast criterium on the first day, and the Oracle road race on the second day. It was the first competition for Francis Horton, Patrick Holland, Santiago Chavez, Greg Albright, Chris Schlabach, and Marcel Berger in 2016.
Usually, the first competition of a cyclist season feels like to be in a no man’s land, we don’t know how we’ll perform and whether the workload of training we’ve done over the winter was sufficient. Understandably, the expectations have been low until this point.
Particularly, this was the case for Francis Horton a category 5 racer from Silver City who did participate the first time at all in a sanctioned cycling race. He could collect two mass starts in Tucson and thus, already obtained 2 out of ten necessary mass starts on his account to upgrade to a category 4 racer.
For Patrick Holland was the start in the 2016 season very satisfying. Patrick represented the colors of ZiaVelo in the masters 45+ and finished 5th in the criterium, 6th in the road race, and 4th in the omnium.
For our racers in the Pro/1/2/3, Santiago Chavez, Greg Albright, Chris Schlabach, and Marcel Berger was the kick start in the season very satisfying as well. Santiago and Greg helped Chris and Marcel to place 18th and 10th out of fifty racers in the criterium. Heading into the road race with a racer placed in the top 10 in the GC, the riders have formed a tactical plan to set up Marcel into a good position to move up in the GC. Due a great sacrificing team performance of Santiago, Greg and Chris, Marcel was able to finish the road race on a 5th place and moved up in the general classification on a solid 6th place.
Thanks to all ZiaVelo racers who’ve represented the ZiaVelo jersey and our sponsors in the Santa Catalina Omnium 2016. The next competition for our racers will be the Valley of the Sun stage race in Phoenix from February 12th-14th.
Chain right,
Marcel
