A few ZiaVelo Cyclists traveled to Phoenix to race in the Valley of the Sun Stage race, a three day and stage event, including a time trial, road race, and criterium. The first stage, the time trial, was a success for three of our Zia racers, which would set the pace for the rest of the stage race. Tamatha Risner won her very first time trial in Cat 3 and Kathy Alvarez only a few seconds behind in 2nd place, with 3rd place coming in 52 seconds behind. Something worth mentioning is that the top three racers of the 21 starters were the only racers in their 40’s. Most other racers were half their age! Both ladies finished strong in the road race and crit to hang on to the top spots on the podium for overall general classification, with Tamatha winning the overall stage race and Kathy in 2nd place. Jerry Garcia came in a remarkable 4th place in a tough Masters 45+ category time trial and 5th place in the crit, coming in 6th for overall general classification. Tim Ketelaar and David Hughes were also representing ZVC, racing in both the time trial and road races.
Some of our High Altitude/ZiaVelo mountain bike racers headed to Tucson to race the 24 hour Old Pueblo Epic Rides race. Philip Simpson and Kevin Quattlebaum raced on a coed team of five in the combined age group of 250+ and won after racing 21 laps. Laura Larisch raced the solo female category and came in 8th place after completing an impressive 11 laps.
The cycling season continues with the ZiaVelo Trifecta coming up in just 2 weeks! Don’t miss this epic race! You have the option to race all three events, including the time trial, crit, and road race, or individual events.
